Civil partnership in Cyprus : what you need to know?

As according to the publication of the Civil Union Law of 2015 on the 9th of December 2015 , it is now possible for both same-sex and heterosexual couples to enter into a civil partnership.

Certainly , the above Law can be considered as an important development in the area of human rights in Cyprus, specifically with same –sex couples who can enter into  an alternative way of marriage for the first time.

At the same time, it gives the heterosexual couples the opportunity for a secular alternative solution to the marriage.

The civil partnership has the same rights as a marriage unless otherwise specified in the law . Generally speaking, the term “spouse” in the Cypriot legislation is considered equivalent to the term “partner”, with the exception of the Law on the adoption.

A Civil Partnership can be contracted through the signing of the specific form of civil partnership before the Registrar of the District Office of the residence of one of the persons concerned with the absence of any vows that applies on the procedure of a marriage.
